How to Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade - A Step-By-Step Guide

!±8± How to Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade - A Step-By-Step Guide

Knowing how to sharpen your lawn mower blade is important in getting the crisp, clean cut that keeps your garden looking great. If your grass is ragged and torn after mowing or if your grass turns brown the next day then chances are you have a dull blade causing this damage. Sharpen that dull blade by following this easy, step-by-step guide.

Sharpen Your Mower Blade or Replace It?

Signs that your mower blade needs to be replaced include blade damage that causes mower vibration, and a cracked or severely bent blade. Lawn mower blades can be sharpened several times before needing replacement.

If you are unsure whether a replacement is needed, take the blade into a small engine repair shop and have them take a look at it.

How Often Should You Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade?

For the best cut you should sharpen every couple of weeks or, at the least, once a month. In between the scheduled sharpening take a few minutes to inspect your grass after cutting, looking for the ragged and torn edges that indicate a dull blade and sharpen more often, if needed.

Step-by-Step Guide to Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to sharpening your lawn mower blade. Always consult the owners manual that came with your mower prior to removing the blade

1. Assemble the equipment you will need:

Safety goggles Ear plugs, if using a grinding machine Wrench to remove the blade Steel brush Metal file, bench grinder, or your choice of a sharpening tool Blade balancer

2. Disconnect the spark plug (as required for electric mowers) and tilt the mower on its side.

3. Prevent the blade from moving by wedging a block between the blade and the mower deck.

4. Use the wrench to remove the bolt at the center of the blade then carefully remove the blade to avoid hurting yourself.

5. Using the steel brush remove the rust and debris from the blade. Inspect the blade and determine if it needs replacing.

6. Using the file or grinder of your choice sharpen the blade along the original angle of each cutting edge.

Maintain the original angle. File in one direction only - toward the edge. Take equal amounts of steel off each edge.

7. Check the balance of the blade horizontally one way and, then, flip it over and check again.

If the blade does not balance, file on the heavy end. In balancing the blade, avoid filing on the newly sharpened cutting edge.

8. Reinstall the newly sharpened and balanced blade. Be sure to install the blade correctly by making sure the lift wing on each end points toward the deck of the lawn mower.

That's it. Armed with the knowledge of how to sharpen your lawn mower blade you can look forward to seasons of a beautifully mowed lawn.

Leaf Blower Or Sweeper?

!±8± Leaf Blower Or Sweeper?

First of all let look at the differences between them. Lawn vacuums or sweepers, as they are sometimes called, come in three varieties; hand powered, powered (gas or electricity) and towed. Leaf blowers come as only gas or electricity powered.

In essence although they are both to collect up unwanted leaves they each go about it in a very different way. The lawn sweepers, as the name suggests, is effectively a rotating brush that passes over the lawn and sweeps debris in to the collect bag. The leaf blower passes blows leaves and debris in to a manageable pile for you to do something with.

You may think - well no thoughts required here, I'll get a leaf sweeper - it takes a step out of the whole leaf collection process. With the blower I have to walk all over my lawn only to then have to pick the leaves up in the end, whereas with the lawn sweeper I can walk over my lawn with it and it collects the leaves in a bag which I can then neatly empty to wherever I choose. To a certain extent you would be right to think this, but then it really does depend upon the style and size of your lawn. For examples, there will be some lawns that are a very awkward shape that has a lot of nooks and crannies. It would be very difficult to get the lawn sweeper in to all of these and perhaps the leaf blower would be a better option.

Many leaf blowers have one function and that is to blow leaves, lawn sweepers can have many functions and uses. Not only can they be used for collecting leaves but you can also use them on your patio, driveway or any other surface that has debris on that you may want to collect. Some lawn sweepers also have a shredding facility; this is great if you want to create leaf mould or mulch for your garden. The shredding facility does have draw back though - you are not going to be able to use your vacuum on any other surface than grass. The shredder will not last long picking up grit of the driveway.

In terms of which is best for you, you need to look at the shape of your lawn, consider how much leaf fall you get and if you regularly sweep other non-grass surfaces.

Full Surface Resistance Test

Test Four: InMotion Generator full Surface Air Resistance Test Video Transcript Airflow for the full surface air resistance test will be simulated by a leaf blower and be introduced to the testing rig through this nozzle here. The air flow will make contact with the simulated bumper here. This is a comparison test so two configurations will be tested. First the InMotion generator's intake port will be covered to the simulate a solid bumper, then tested again with the cover removed so air can flow through the generator. When the airflow strikes the rig it will push back on it increasing pressure on the water filled bladder here. When compressed the water in the bladder will rise up the column of plastic tubing. The average resistance line is marked here to communicate the force of the air flow striking the rig. When in the open configuration we will be measuring the voltage produced with this volt meter here. Lets begin. The air flow has been initiated. Please note the airflow is pushing the testing rig back into the water filled bladder. Please note the volt meter is reading zero as no airflow is making its way to the generator. Note that the column of water has risen to the average resistance line. The air flow has been terminated. The intake port cover has been removed to convert the testing rig into the open configuration. The airflow has been initiated. Please note the airflow is pushing the testing rig back into the water filled bladder. Please note the volt meter is ...
